In 2019, Dr. Andreas Vollenweider and a team of neurologists developed music that showed significant development of premature babies' brains. Kaleigh Griswell, then a senior at Harris County High School, saw this article on Facebook and was immediately inspired! Music has always been a large part of her life, from her time in the NICU during infancy to her current time in college.
Under the mentorship of Harris County High School's Band Director Miranda Carlsen, they developed a project to utilize classical music and Vollenweider's samples in NICU and maternity wards.
At this time, the project - then named Music Makes Miracles - only operated by supplying hospitals with playlist cards and CDs to give to parents to play for their newborns. When the COVID-19 pandemic started, Griswell had to put MMM to a temporary halt.
In 2022, Griswell established the Music Makes Miracles Foundation to continue newborn musical stimulation while also extending this dream to grades K-12! The sister program, MMM Beyond, communicates and coordinates with local music educators to help alleviate financial lapses and supply instruments and activities to their programs.
Griswell is currently very active in the Georgia Tech Marching Band and the Iota Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi and encourages everyone to continue their music education after graduation.
